The promised paradise of Rosario Tornatore

The long life experience of uninterrupted, illuminated and purified creation of Rosario Tornatore offers a heartaking harvest based on perfection as an utopian aesthetic concept based on the strive for the presentation – and not re-presentation-  of a universe structured by light, inner light, for rendering a form to that which has no form: Emotions, memories, believe, love and optimism.
His artistic language aims to reveal the beauty of an imagined mystic universe of light of its poetic architecture of colors. The syntax of this language results from the perfection of an intuitive geometry from mathematics without formula.
The work of Tornatore in the last decade from the year 2000 is divided into three phases; which all of them open a window to his inner visions to the sublime forces of the genesis of creation: Cosmochromie with its enigmatic light sources where organic forms search for a definition of order. Archichromie where light vectors are integrated into architectonic sophisticated light-constructions and Topochromie in recent years were his visions are concentrated on light-colors to create perfect structures of rectangular architecture floating in space.
For his enigmatic visions of Tornatore stands above existing models, they are the fruits of an amazing introspection into his own self. The worlds he creates are a place for the self.
The philosopher Henri Bergson who was profoundly non materialist and idealist claimed “that reality was that, which we all seize from within that is made up of each individuals experience and intuition of the world rather than external objectivity.”
The imagined reality of Tornatore is based on intuition and it’s the reality of his inner richness. Analyzing the work of Tornatore we move from colorful medieval vitrage to associations with the avant-garde of the 20th century and from there of the postwar modern art. We refer here to the polychromatic architecture of Piet Mondrian and the shift from outer to inner visions by Vassily Kandinsky. “Mondrian was not illustrating pure reality or pure beauty, but was making the painting be a reality”. The lessons of the reduced structures of Mondrian exist clearly in the base of structures in Tornatore’s work. Yet in his intentions to emphasize the dynamic rhythm of light and movement the cosmic visions include multiplied events that never renounce the concept of beauty.
Tornatore’s deep spaces mirror the promised paradise of his believes in human faith. He aims to radiate it through great mastery of perfection with deep responsibility to every touch of his brush on the support. This responsibility shifted his interest and protected him from getting involved in current style battles, from being involved in the field of art and economy and from draining efforts to be accepted by art institutions or acknowledged by recent art canons. Instead he is concentrating on the pure vision from his inner self, transmitting light colors, movement and space radiating beauty and harmony into a world of chaotic existence.

Mirrors of universes to come
or already vanished into changing geometries
inside that spark become by now a trace of ash
on a hand. Here, then, the eye beyond
peers at the feverish silences
of the darkness, of the time before day
or perhaps falls upon the after effect that is fading to nothing
and it's a horizon that grows
out of every instant that was, from the colour of what was.
A cross of light nailed to existence
fed also by that sidereal seed
and always different on the journey
to rise. There is no rest for the anxiety
of the spirit exiled from safe harbour
it travels along routes with no ports of call,
through swarms and schisms of desire,
through entanglements of tortuous thoughts
banished by uncertain seasons
locked in labyrinths of crystal. The earth
endures other prisons where deserted icebergs
melt, shores cleansed
by those tides unknown to moons
and flaming with pyres at their source,
breaths of exploded volcanoes and fierce tsunamis.
From the bright vortexes of quartz,
from the tangles of rubies, from the veins
of emeralds all the way to dreamt-of
pink gems, a rosary of pink,
evenly cast out into the dizziness of nothingness
the solar grid of the last frame
cracked, the illusion of a boundary
and a fixed mould of every emptiness.
Transhumance of flights in search of stellar
iridescences, and projections inside cut prisms,
in circuits of radiant whirlpools
through ascetics to an invisible centre,
a motion that does not erase
the drifting of sunset from its crater.
Until it plumbs the depths
of vacancies in that faraway splendour
and newly alight
which trembling still echoes with every daily
spectre, with sights unknown since forever.
Eternity is at the door,
on the threshold of time that impatient
waits to return to the flow
of its beginnings never tapped.
The architecture of the mind recalls its shapes.
